Las Cruces is home to the following golf courses and golf communities:

•    Sonoma Ranch Golf Course & Community
•    Red Hawk Golf Club & Metro Verde Community
•    Picacho Hills Country Club & Community
•    New Mexico State University Golf Course

Sonoma Ranch Golf Course & Community:  This is desert golf New Mexico style, a championship caliber, semi-private course that ranks among the finest in the Southwest. Opened in 2000, this course offers challenging golf and spectacular scenery amidst the mesquite- and brush-covered desert. It won a Best New Course nomination from Golf Digest in 2000 and holds a 3-1/2 star ranking in its “Places to Play” list.  Golf Digest states, “Incredible views … tough greens … every hole a challenge.”  Designed by Cal Olsen, an internationally-known architect with courses from Singapore to Canada, the Sonoma Ranch Golf Course is a long course with rolling hills, strewn with bunkers and best known for its undulating bent grass greens. With five tee boxes per hole, it offers a stimulating challenge for all levels of golfer.  Nestled in the heart of the Mesilla Valley, adjacent to the Organ Mountains, there are exceptional views from the tops of the hills. You may even see coyote, doves, and other desert wildlife while you play.

Red Hawk Golf Club & Metro Verde Community:  Unique to the region, Metro Verde is located in the high desert in the northeast part of Las Cruces, New Mexico.  Within this master-planned development of nearly 2,200 acres lies a world-class championship golf course – Red Hawk Golf Club.   Metro Verde is an innovative mix of land uses, and Smart Growth principles highlighted by energy efficiency and sustainable practices. Whether your interest is single-family, multi-family, commercial, or light industrial property, you’ll find a reasonably priced selection in Metro Verde.

The major amenity within Metro Verde is Red Hawk Golf Club, designed by Ken Dye and built in a beautiful high-desert setting. The course blends wonderfully into the natural terrain and features panoramic views of the Organ and Dona Ana Mountains. This is a true championship golf course that measures 7,523 yards from the farthest of the 5 tees on its 18 holes. The 200-acre links-style course offers golfers a unique challenge with its rolling greens, 76 bunkers, and 5 lakes (with water coming into play on 8 holes). The top-quality maintenance of the course is facilitated by a new state-of-the-art irrigation well and 700 acre-feet of water rights. Red Hawk is open to the public and offers both daily-fee play and memberships at reasonable rates.

Picacho Hills Country Club and Community: Picacho Peak is the predominant landmark for the Picacho Hills area. Picacho Hills has several neighborhoods surrounding Picacho Hills Country Club and its championship golf course.   Picacho Hills Country Club is nestled in the rolling hills above the desert city of Las Cruces in Southern New Mexico and looks out at breathtaking views of the Mesilla Valley, Rio Grande River, Organ Mountains, and the twinkling evening lights of Dona Ana County. The nearly 7,000 yard, par 72 golf course at Picacho Hills is sure to impress you.  Pro Turf magazine described our course’s lush bluegrass fairways and bent grass greens as follows: “Picture an emerald lying on a mound of sand…a dark green, shining jewel in striking contrast with its surroundings. That’s the first impression of the Picacho Hills Country Club golf course.”

But what good is a great course if you can’t play on it, right? Well, unlike over-crowded courses throughout the Southwest, our course permits members to play almost whenever they wish. Also, inclement weather closes the course less than three days during an average year. Barcelona Ridge, Butterfield Ridge, and Coronado Ridge are established custom home communities with single-family residences, comfortable lot sizes, and patio homes. The newest community,  Picacho Mountain, retains the natural beauty of the gentle hills and is a mixture of single-family and patio homes. Picacho Mountain has been designated a “green build” community.

The New Mexico State University Golf Course: Designed by Floyd Farley and opened in December 1963. Regarded as one of the most outstanding facilities in the Southwest, the NMSU Golf Course has played host to three NCAA National Championships along with numerous conference and USGA qualifying championships. Highlighted by beautiful scenery, the 18-hole NMSU Golf Course is framed by the majestic Organ Mountains to the east and the picturesque Mesilla Valley to the west. Measuring over 7000 yards from the “Aggie Tees,” the golf course provides a challenge to golfers of all skill levels with a wonderful array of holes ranging in difficulty from the very challenging to those that provide good birdie opportunities. The course offers a unique combination of both traditional and desert golf course features with large greens and generous fairways for the average player.
